Responsibilities

How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW?

The main function and purpose of this position is to participate in the operation of the plant for the production of acetylene and the filling of acetylene and propylene in compliance with safety requirements in order to meet customer expectations and ensure the efficiency of operations, while promoting ALC's quality and safety objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Participates in the execution of production work: Receives instructions concerning the work to be done and production priorities.  Assists Operator I in the following functions:

  • Moving trailers or having them moved if the operator has the skills to do so; 
  • Participates in their loading and unloading;
  • Handles cylinders.  
  • Adds carbide to generators as required.  
  • Handles cylinders; 
  • Removes or replaces caps.  
  • Loads and unloads trailers; 
  • Uses forklift.  
  • Empties overloaded cylinders and finishes filling underloaded ones.  
  • Returns acetylene from cylinders with too much residual gas, or those due for inspection when checking dates on the preparation scale, via the emptying ramps (to the compressors and/or generator).  
  • Removes empty cylinders from pallets and places and secures full cylinders on pallets.

2. Prepares empty cylinders for filling: Prepares empty cylinders for inspection or filling; visual inspection against defect labels, weighing, sorting of customer-owned cylinders, acetylation as required according to acetylation charters, replacement of self-adhesive labels.  Ensures packaging of new acetylene cylinders as required, following plant procedures.

3. Ensures cylinder filling: 

  •  Connects cylinders to the manifold, opens cylinder taps and manifold valves, regulates water flow, checks filling pressures and temperatures, checks for leaks.  Stops filling, closes taps and valves.  Carries out boom changes.  Weighs full bottles, writes corresponding volume on sticker, checks pressure and absence of leaks at bottle and valve.  Paints cylinders as required.  Fills propylene cylinders when necessary.  
  • Prepares Hydrogen trailers for filling. Checks test date and general condition; connects hose, purges and fills trailer according to residual gas; stops filling, records pressure and checks for leaks.

4. Ensures quality control and maintenance: 

  • Maintains tools and equipment in good condition.  
  • Keeps plant clean
  • Stores tools after use, 
  • Observes safety rules.  
  • Participates in periodic plant maintenance: cleaning of generators, cleaning and filling of high-pressure dryers, cleaning of nozzles.

5. Quality / safety: 

  • Observes safety rules.  
  • Follows plant quality procedures. 
  • Has the authority to stop any filling if the purity is non-conforming or for any cause that may affect quality, 
  • Is responsible and has the authority to initiate any action to prevent the occurrence of a non-conformity, 
  • Is responsible and has the authority to record in writing any event that has an impact on quality and notify the manager or his representative, in the area where his/her intervention is required, 
  • Is called upon to participate in any team recommendations for solutions to any quality-related problem, in any team verification for the implementation of solutions, and in the control to continue operations relating to non-conforming products until corrected.

6. Handling equipment, materials & tools :

Equipment for producing acetylene or receiving this gas in line such as generator, forklift, calcium carbide handling hoist, Wilden and/or Gorman Rupp pumps, pressure regulators, compressors, BP and HP dryer, ammonia scrubber, acetylene purification system, depressurization valves, overpressure valves, Genlis valves, conditioning ramps, filling ramps, safety control panel, cylinders, acetone tank, diesel, propylene, acetone pump, propylene pump, propylene bottles, nitrogen tank, scale, acetylene detector, electrical equipment, analyzer, test tube, claude burette, manometer, hand tools, natural gas furnace, punch, label, shipping documents, calcium carbide, acetylene, acetone, calcium chloride, compressed nitrogen and liquid nitrogen, liquid and gaseous hydrogen, diesel, propylene, compressed air.

7. Other tasks: May perform other tasks on request.

Are you a MATCH?

Experience and training:

  • Diploma: Secondary V
  • Training: preferably technical
  • Knowledge: operations assistance in an industrial environment, forklift, driver's license required
  • Good spoken and written communication skills

Skills required: 

  • Compliance with safety rules and regulations is a condition of employment (see point 5)
  • Positive attitude at work, responsible (especially for safety, own and colleagues'), due to the ATEX classified environment,
  • Understand the importance of serving customers well,
  • Good team spirit, likes to assist colleagues,
  • Proactive attitude regarding tasks to be performed,
  • Able to perform routine work while maintaining an adequate production rate,
  • Able to work in a standing position for long periods of time.

12 hour schedule, day and night. Day 5:00am to 5:00pm. Night 5:00pm to 5:00pm. Work schedule spread over 3 weeks of 40 hrs.
