Job Summary/Scope:
Configures, assists with the installation of, and troubleshoots local-area computer networks and associated equipment. Performs and maintains basic LAN and LAN to WAN operations. Performs LAN and WAN troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose common LAN/WAN problems. Upgrades and configures network equipment. Provide users and network operations personnel with LAN and WAN technical support. This can also involve support of LAN from a Voice over IP perspective. Monitors network traffic and makes necessary recommendations for additional resources or hardware. The incumbent assists in the implementation of the corporation’s network architecture including LANs and WANs, LAN internetworking, and connections with the WAN environment. Is expected to assist in the identification of hardware and software technical problems and malfunctions related to LANs/WANs and related servers. Individual will assist in the areas of throughput analysis, problem solving, and infrastructure planning. Helps locate necessary tools and processes to identify troublesome trends as they develop. Participates and provides expertise in providing a stable performance environment for enterprise applications. Participates in various IT projects intended to continually improve/upgrade the data and telecommunications infrastructure. Assists in the design and implementation of large data communications or telecommunications networks. Helps plan and monitor the installation of communications circuits. Aids in short and long term planning to meet communications requirements. Is knowledgeable of the design and implementation of LANs and WANs using switching and router technology. Individual assists in the preparation of tradeoff studies and evaluations for vendor equipment.
Responsibilities:
Install/Implement IT Infrastructure Solution Components. Provide IT Infrastructure and Operating Support Services
- Assist in Aligning Business Requirements with Network Architecture and Design Principles
- Assist in Defining Logical and Physical Components
- Assist in Defining Logical and Physical Work Processes to Operate Network Components
- Assist in Configuring/Developing Global Telecommunications Network
- Assist in Configuring IT Infrastructure Solution/Components
- Ensure All Documentation Is Prepared and Submitted to Program Library Function
- Ensure All Employees, Contractors, Suppliers and Managers Are Trained on All of the IT Infrastructure Component Changes
- Ensure All Stakeholders Have Problem Identification Procedures and Escalation Capability to Identify Major Problems Immediately for Resolution
- IT Infrastructure Components to Be Commissioned/De-Commissioned
- Receive and Initiate Projects Based on Approval of Program Management Office
- Confirm Business Requirements and Scope
- Estimate Project Costs and Schedule, Ensuring It Is Within PMO Authorized Limits
- Schedule Project Based On Work Process Owner Priorities
- Design and /Apply/Install Changes
- Test Changes
- Obtain WPO/Client Acceptance
- Update Project Costs and Completion Date
- Obtain Gate Approval to Close Project
- Monitor Technology Component Performance or Application/Database Performance
- Anticipate/Identify Problems and Submit Corrective Project to Program Office
- Receive Problems from IT Triage Help Desk
- Analyze/Log/Categorize Problems
- Identify Root Cause
- Determine Alternatives and Perform Fix
- Follow-up to Ensure Corrective Actions Are Working
- Schedule IT Operating Resources
- Monitor/Actively Manage Capacity, Performance and Security to IT Agreements, Policies and Standards
- Manage Business Continuity and Recovery
Major Deliverables:
Install and Implement Network Equipment and Solutions and Provide Network Infrastructure and Services Support
- Assist with documentation of production network
- Assist with maintaining accurate and up to date hardware and software inventory
- Assist with the communication of problems with appropriate follow-through on fault isolation progress, appropriate escalations, and documentation of root cause analysis. Communications paths include users, peers, management, network operations center personnel, customers and associated vendor trouble reporting systems.
- Maintain and support a fully functional network that meets or exceeds business and customer requirements
- Assist with the design of LAN and WAN communications systems and environments, which include hardware, software, authentication, access methods and protocols used.
- Assist with the design and implementation of LAN-to-LAN, WAN-to-WAN, and WAN-to-LAN communications and connections. Also, designs for control, flexibility, scalability, and adaptability.
- Identification and resolution of hardware and software technical problems and malfunctions related to LANs/WANs and related systems.
- Uses necessary tools and processes to identify and correct problems
- Ensures a stable performance environment for the enterprise applications.
- Participates in various IT projects intended to continually improve/upgrade the telecommunications infrastructure.
Required Job Skills:
- Broad and in-depth knowledge of Ethernet; Must understand the four basic elements of Ethernet.
- Working knowledge of router technology
- Working knowledge of voice communications and voice over IP technology.
- Working knowledge of network technology, operating systems, and applications
Candidates must have a strong understanding of Ethernet and be fundamentally sound in IP routing and associated protocols in an Enterprise environment. Fundamental networking/telecom knowledge of communications protocols and TCP/IP is a must. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and customer service skills required. Candidates should be well versed in one or more of the following: IP, OSPF, RIPV2, IP Multicast, DSL, HSRP, ISDN, AAA, Frame Relay, PPP, ATM, SONET, T3/T1, E1/E3, Gigabit/Fast Ethernet, Spanning Tree, VLANs, VOIP, 802.3, 802.3ae, 802.3ag, 802.11, 802.3ad, VRRP, 802.1Q, 802.1P, DiffServ, and diagnostic tools, e.g., sniffers.
- 3 to 5 years hands on experience with PDS/Structured Cabling Systems
- 3 to 5 years hands on experience with multiple vendor L2/L3 switching equipment
- 3 to 5 years hands on experience with Alcatel-Lucent or Cisco routers
- 3 to 5 years experience with a large TCP/IP network
