5 Tips for a successful recruitment career
As the industry continues to grow, now is the time to think about a career in recruiting.
“Recruitment can be a very exciting and rewarding industry to work for, but like any other business environment, it requires a lot of focus, determination and commitment from the consultants,” explains Jane Norton, Director of Talent Acquisition at Michael Page.
First, you need to research the industry as well as the specific requirements of the role you are applying for. Then look at these tips to help you make the most of your career in recruiting.
1. Build long-term partnerships
Building and maintaining long-term relationships is a huge part of the day-to-day role of an HR specialist.
“Understanding your client’s (company’s) needs for selecting and understanding what drives people at work will allow you to successfully match the right candidates to the right jobs,” says Jane.
It’s not just about external customer relations, but also about the skills for building strong relationships with your colleagues. Demonstrating your communication skills and your ability to be a team player will help you manage relationships based on mutual trust and respect, as well as help you build a successful recruiting career.
“One of the most important things to remember when building strong relationships is that people are uncontrollable and they don’t hurry to make decisions, which can sometimes be one of the biggest one in their lives; always be patient and don’t push people to make decisions, “Jane explains.
Compassion and understanding will demonstrate that you are interested in the needs of your company and candidate, which will help you earn their trust.
2. Embrace technology
In the last ten years, technology has changed the way most industries work. The HR sector makes no difference.
“The way we work with candidates is much more active and less dependent on candidates who respond to ads. Now we are looking for talent on a daily basis, “says Phil Cookson, director of creative recruiting agency.
There has been an increase in the usage of video technology, and companies such as Creative Resource are using applications to chat with applicants. In addition, you need a good understanding of all the major social media channels. Recruitment staff uses all these technologies and social media platforms to collect and analyze information.
The digital environment is also changing the way small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), such as Creative Resource, manage their internal processes. Phil finds that it allows for a higher level of efficiency and ability for staff to do their jobs from anywhere.
3. Have self-confidence
It is important for your success as a recruitment consultant that you demonstrate the right level of self-confidence. This will improve the way your colleagues look at you and your opinion and your ideas are more likely to be taken under consideration.
“Being able to be confident, charming and persuasive while working as part of a team, will help you achieve your goals and achieve the best results,” says Jane.
4. Think about your career development
In order to succeed in recruitment, you need to know where your career is going and how you can move forward.
Phil is sure that a career in recruitment has a great potential, regardless of its route. You could work for a small niche company like Phil or a large global company with offices worldwide.
Another option is to do it yourself, as Phil points out: “Many people choose to start their own businesses, so if you have an entrepreneurial skills, this is a great industry to work in.”
Phil also recommends to all graduates “to consider which sectors may be of interest to them or are related to their studies.” Choosing to work in an industry that you have knowledge of can greatly make it easy to understand the customers’ requirements and the challenges they face.
There is a small number of strategies for recruiting graduates that you could join or such you could be trained in as a recruiting consultant. You need to understand what training and development a company can offer you and what they would expect from you.
